Browsing and Vegetation Management
When some folks are asked what goats eat, some will answer, tin cans and everything they can get their mouth on. Fortunately, goats are very selective eaters. Unless starved, they will not intentionally poison themselves by eating poisonous plants or shrubbery. They are browsers, and therefore roam throughout a given area. Goats will browse their favorite plants or shrubs first and as the day progresses, they move to different areas. Unlike sheep, goats will not eat grasses down to the dirt. Goats are very picky eaters!
Barlas Boer Goats is lucky to have friends that raise organic produce. These reds are feasting on certified organic Anderson Organic Farms red and butter lettuce.
Anderson Organic Farms is located in Petaluma and has a produce market on Petaluma Blvd North.
Goats eat a wide variety of noxious weeds and plants, such as starthistle, poison oak, blackberries and dock.
For fire prone areas, when standing on their hindlegs, Boer goats can get to be about 6'5". Due to their height, fire prone areas can be cleared in an environmentally friendly way.
